In the world of tuning, these are known as ECU remapping stages, which are progressively expansive and substantial tuning processes designed to allow you to get the best performance out of your car, no matter what your goals are.
There are typically three main stages which get progressively more involved, expansive and expensive. Here is a brief overview of the three stages and what to expect.
Stage One Remaps
A stage one remap is what most people think of when they are looking for a remap, as it involves unlocking the most out of your car’s stock components by reprogramming its engine control unit (ECU).
The ECU controls the ignition timing, fuel injection, the turbocharger boost and other elements of the engine setup in ways that optimise their power, fuel economy and emissions, ensuring that the car remains safe to use and meets MOT guidelines.
Stage Two Remaps
A stage two remap, by contrast, involves targeted upgrades to your vehicle in order to maximise the potential of the engine and what can be done with your remap whilst still maintaining the car as a daily driver.
A few selected changes, such as the intercooler, the exhaust and the induction kit, can have an outsized effect on your car’s power and potential without prohibitive expense.
Stage Three Remaps
An expensive custom performance package, stage three remaps use much more powerful
components to allow for the maximum level of performance without compromising reliability, safety or emissions.
Exactly what this will involve will depend on your car, but can involve modifications to the internals of the engine, the fuel pump, fuel injectors and even the turbocharger.
